It is said that the olive-tree, a tree of sunny climates, was born at the same time as the Mediterranean. There is evidence of its cultivation in Syria, Phoenicia and Palestine in 3000 BC. The Greeks brought it to our region 25 centuries ago. It’s a symbol of peace and fertility. Ancient writings already spoke of the virtues of its fruit and its oil and scientists today are still discovering new qualities in them.
The Baronnies are home to olive trees in the Ouvèze and Aygues valleys. It’s an important part of local agriculture and its produce is of gastronomic renown. The first “Appellation d’Origine Controlée” (a label that guarantees origin and quality) for olive oil is for the oil of Nyons and the Baronnies.
